Shanghai Releases Action Plan for Tackling Key Technologies of "Metaverse"

1、 Overall ideas and objectives

By 2025, significant breakthroughs have been made in the research of scientific issues related to cutting-edge advantageous fields, and original innovative achievements continue to emerge; Focusing on technological advantages and competing fields, mastering a batch of key technologies, and continuously improving the underlying technical support capabilities; Accelerate the systematic breakthrough of "Metaverse" technology based on the demand of key scenarios; The level of transformation and industrialization of scientific and technological achievements continues to improve, forming an internationally competitive "Metaverse" innovation cluster, ensuring the safety and resilience of the innovation chain, industrial chain, and Supply chain security, and providing strong support for accelerating the construction of a scientific and technological innovation center with global influence.

Significant progress has been made in tackling innovative and leading technological challenges. New breakthroughs have been made in strategic frontier and key technologies such as AI generated content (AIGC), spatial computing, intelligent coding, high-performance low-power micro display, multimode sensing, Web3 Network operating system, cross scale acquisition and reconstruction, Brain–computer interface, etc., more than 30 core technologies and products with important influence have been formed around intelligent terminals, content production, cloud platforms, etc., and the "Metaverse" innovation chain, industrial chain Moving towards the high-end of the value chain.

Accelerate the construction of advanced application technology system. Form a group of technological innovation and service platforms to effectively promote collaborative innovation and achievement transformation. Facing the important application needs such as Digital transformation of urban economy, life and governance, we will create high-level key technology test and verification scenarios, form the whole chain technology supply capacity, and build a globally competitive "Metaverse" technology system.
The "Metaverse" innovation ecology has been constantly improved. High quality incubators, investment and financing services, high-level research and development institutions, scientific and technological backbone enterprises, innovation teams and other elements have gathered. The regulatory technology and governance level of the "Metaverse" has been continuously improved, and an open, inclusive, dynamic, healthy and orderly innovation ecosystem has accelerated to form.

2、 Main attack direction

Focusing on the immersive, open, sustainable, real-time, people-centered and other cross-border composite technical characteristics of the "Metaverse", focusing on the content, storage, transmission, terminal and other technical aspects of the "Metaverse", combining the industrial development at home and abroad and the city's R&D foundation, focusing on immersive technology and Web3 technology Creating new heights in key technology fields such as perceptual interaction and blockchain.

3、 Carry out immersive audiovisual technology layout

Faced with the demand for the production of massive immersive audio and video content in the "Metaverse", based on the Technology roadmap of AI enabling virtual reality integration, we will focus on the research and development of key technologies such as artificial intelligence content generation (AIGC), cross scale acquisition and reconstruction, digital human generation and driving, and virtual space 3D engine, to achieve the automatic and low-cost production of immersive audio and video content in the hyperrealistic "Metaverse", and support the ecological construction of content creation in the "Metaverse".

4、 Accelerate breakthroughs in immersive computing technology research and development

Focusing on the technical requirements of immersive experience of "Metaverse" virtual reality integration, the Technology roadmap of immersive computing based on end cloud collaboration focuses on the layout of key technology research and development such as spatial computing, intelligent coding, distributed rendering and distribution, and improves the efficiency of content computing and distribution of "Metaverse".

5、 Carry out the layout of key technologies for new displays

Facing the development trend and demand of high definition and deep immersion in the content presentation of the "Metaverse", we will focus on the layout of high-performance low-power micro display devices, high brightness lightweight optical modules, holography and light field display and other key technologies to tackle key problems, seize the key entrance of the "Metaverse", and promote the high-quality development of new display industries such as near eye display and naked eye holography.

6、 Strengthen breakthroughs in perceptual interaction technology

In order to meet the requirements of long time, high response and diversity in the natural interaction of the "Metaverse", we will focus on the research and development of key software and hardware technologies such as low-power interaction algorithms, multimode sensing, gesture and eye tracking, and Brain–computer interface, so as to realize multimodal information perception interaction such as vision, hearing, touch, and posture in the natural environment.
